"For right now, the PS3 is tough to beat"
I already wrote about this on the Crave blog, but right now I think it's hard to argue that there is a better Blu-ray value than the PS3. It costs less than all current standalone players, has HDMI 1.3 and loads discs a lot faster. Not only that, but its image quality is essentially identical to other standalone players we've reviewed.
That being said, that still doesn't mean the time is right to go Blu-ray. Nobody is sure what is going to happen in the format war. And in just a few weeks at CES, we're sure to be seeing some new Blu-ray players that are going to make the decision more difficult. If you need to buy Blu-ray NOW, it's tough to beat the PS3. Otherwise, it wouldn't hurt to wait a little and see how this shakes out.
Why would you do this project?
